The Prayer Shawl Ministry of Our Savior Lutheran Church, Laurel, Maryland is a vibrant group who reach out to our local community to provide comfort and blessings in the form of handmade items such as shawls, lapghans, pocket prayer cloths and prayer pillows.
Each of the items created lovingly by our ministry’s members is blessed during a Sunday church service before it is given to someone needing comfort.
We do not live in isolation in this world. We live in an interconnected global community. When something difficult happens to someone else, it hurts us. Prayer shawls are a way to heal others while healing ourselves. When you make a prayer shawl you are intentionally infusing each stitch with hope, warmth, love, compassion and care. You emanate the hope that the person will be healed from pain. When the gift is received, that warmth is felt, the connection is recalled and healing takes place. When we see pain, loss and tragedy in others, we feel it in ourselves. We feel sad about our own tragedies. We feel fear about possible pains. As we stitch together our connection to this other person through intentional prayer, the meditative action calms us. Our hearts open up through the work of our hands and we feel safe and loved again.
The group meets on the second Saturday of each month in the conference room (right off the lobby). Come when you can; leave when you must. Need help? Experienced knitters/crocheters are always available whether you are a beginner or just need a helping hand. You need not be a member of our congregation to participate in our ministry. All are welcome. POC: Nancy Shampo.
